To properly install a modem, you must correctly determine the hardware configuration of your computer and modem. Sometimes it may be necessary to change the position of the switches located on some boards of the computer. If you incorrectly connect the modem to the computer, the modem may become unstable and unexpected computer malfunctions.

It is better to entrust the initial connection and configuration of the modem to a hardware and software IBM PC series computers. However, services of this kind can be quite expensive, so it makes sense to improve their skills and try to install a modem on their own.

First of all, the method of connecting a modem to a computer depends on whether you have an internal modem or an external one.

An external modem connects to any COM port on the computer. If the computer does not have a COM port installed (which is very unlikely), then you need to purchase it.

Then connect the power to the modem. Most external modems come with a separate power supply, which you need to connect to the local power grid. The output connector of the power supply unit should be connected to the corresponding connector on the modem case.

If you have an internal modem, then you need to install it on the computer motherboard in any free slot.

Then you need to connect the modem to the telephone line and to the telephone if you want to also use this telephone line to transmit voice messages (i.e. use the telephone as usual).

External and internal modems are connected to the telephone line and telephone in the same way. To do this, there are two RJ11 connectors located on the rear panel of the modem. One connector should be labeled "LINE" (line) or "WALL" (wall). It is designed to connect the modem to the telephone line. The other connector is labeled "PHONE" (telephone), and you can plug the telephone connector into it (see Figure 3.1).

Usually comes with a modem special cable to connect the modem to the telephone line. It should be noted here that the RJ11 connector does not fit the standard telephone jacks used in our country. In addition, the RJ11 connector has four lines, and a regular city telephone line has only two. If you do not have a special adapter, you can purchase it or make it yourself (from the cable supplied with the modem and the usual telephone plug and socket) in accordance with Figure 3.2.

According to the figure, you must connect two medium wires to the telephone line and telephone. The remaining two wires must be left unconnected.

After you have completed all of these steps, pick up the phone, not including computer power. If you hear a long beep, everything is fine, otherwise check the connectors and cable connections.

Turn on the power of the computer and modem (in the case of an external modem). Check the phone again. If the phone does not work, check the connectors and cables. If they are OK, refer to the modem documentation, it is possible that it is faulty.

Now you can proceed to check the modem itself. To do this, you need to start any communication program that is at your disposal and try to connect with another modem.

In the modern world there is almost no person who would not be familiar with the Internet. To access this network there are many devices, one of them is a modem. Correct connection computer to modem is a guarantee of stable operation.

Professional connection services are quite expensive, so it’s best to do it on your own. In order to connect a computer to a modem, you need to adhere to the following sequence:

It is necessary to determine the type of modem - it can be external or internal. For an external modem, the computer must have a COM port.

You must connect the modem power supply to electrical network and, accordingly, connect the connector from the power supply unit to the connector on the modem. Internal modem is installed on the motherboard.

Connect the modem to the telephone network. There are two connectors for this - one for connecting a modem and the other for connecting a phone. The connection is made using ordinary shielded cable, the plug of which is marked DB25-M. After connecting, you need to check the operation of the phone when the computer is turned off.

To check the correctness of the modem connection, you need to run a special program at your disposal and try to connect with another modem.

To start working on a computer, you need to create a new connection and follow all the instructions of the installer. The final step will be the "Finish" button. After that, you can connect to the site of the Internet provider, and if the connection is successful, the modem will emit certain clicks. If you dial yourself, you can hear beeps, meaning that the line is busy. After the manipulations, you can begin to work.

Connecting a computer to a modem requires the user to strictly follow all actions as instructed, otherwise the equipment may fail.

Usually, simple communication programs, such as BITCOM or COMIT, come with a modem. You can also use the Terminal application, which is included in the standard configuration of the Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 operating systems.

If you purchased a fax modem, it should also be checked when sending and receiving faxes. To send and receive a fax, you can use the program that came with the modem or the Microsoft At Work PC Fax application that is included with the Windows for Workgroups 3.11 operating system.

Currently, it is difficult to imagine life without the Internet. After all, the Internet has fully entered our lives, ranging from work and ending with a variety of entertainment. That is why it is very important, especially when working, for the Internet to work without interruption. For this and there are devices such as modems.

1. Connecting the modem to the telephone network

Almost all ADSL modems are connected to telephone lines with the help of a wire, at the ends of which there are plugs (connectors). The modem is connected to the telephone network via a splitter, which filters signals that are intended separately for a home phone and a modem.

2. Connecting a computer with a modem

Contrary to popular belief, but it is quite simple to connect a modem to a stationary computer. When buying a modem, the box contains not only the power supply unit of the modem and the modem itself, but also a LAN cable, which is needed to connect devices to the local network using a cable. By taking a LAN cable, we need to insert one end of it into the modem connector and the other into the same connector on the computer. In the computer system, you do not need to change the settings of the network card, it will be automatically configured when connected. After all connections have been made and automatic configuration has occurred, the indicator light on the modem should flash or light up on the modem with the words “LAN”.

3. Configure the modem to connect to the Internet network.

You can connect the modem to the Internet in two ways:

"Bridge"

"Router"

The difference is that when using the "bridge" method, the PC independently makes an Internet connection and uses a modem to transmit information. When using the “router” method, the modem automatically connects to the Internet and only then transfers all the information to the computer. The advantages of using the first method is that the modem carries a small load. This is very useful when using the Internet at high speeds. The disadvantage is that the Internet will function only when the computer is turned on. The advantage of the second method is that it does not require a constantly turned on computer to work with the Internet connection, a switched on modem is enough.
